Montessori Inspired Principles at DEL Academy

1. Respect for the Child

Every child is treated as capable, independent, and deserving of kindness and dignity. Their choices, pace, and individuality are honored.

2. The Absorbent Mind

Children, especially in early years, learn naturally by taking in everything from their environment. They learn best through exploration, repetition, hands-on experience and practical materials.

3. Prepared Environment

The classroom is designed to be calm, organized, beautiful, and accessible. Everything has a purpose and place. Materials are chosen to promote independence and concentration.

4. Auto-Education (Self-Directed Learning)

Children learn best when they are guided by their own interests. Montessori encourages children to explore and learn at their own pace with hands-on materials.

5. Independence

Children are encouraged to do as much as they can on their own—pouring water, dressing themselves, choosing activities—building confidence and self-esteem.

6. Freedom Within Limits

Children have choice and freedom, but within clear, consistent boundaries that support responsibility, respect, and safety. Children are encouraged to choose activities that interest them, while learning to follow simple rules, take care of materials, and show respect for others. This balance helps them develop independence, responsibility, and social skills in a safe, supportive environment.

7. Learning Through Hands-On Materials

Montessori classrooms use special materials that isolate one concept at a time, helping children build understanding through touch, movement, and repetition.

8. Sensitive Periods

Children go through natural “windows of opportunity” when they are especially ready to learn specific skills (language, order, movement, social behaviour). The Montessori approach recognizes these sensitive periods and provides the right materials and opportunities at the right time, allowing children to learn naturally and effortlessly. By observing and guiding children during these periods, educators can support their development without forcing it, helping each child build confidence and mastery in areas they are naturally ready to explore.
